Sommelier Education in Germany

Become a Wine Professional with an IHK or IWI Qualification

Flexible distance learning or in-person training | Up to 100% funding through Aufstiegs-BAföG | More than 800 successful graduates since 2009

A sommelier education programme qualifies you as a professional wine expert for fine dining, premium hospitality, hotels, restaurants and the wine trade. As a trained sommelier, you advise guests with confidence, curate and manage wine lists, oversee wine purchasing and cellar management, develop food and wine pairings and train service teams. The programme provides comprehensive knowledge of international wine regions, grape varieties, viticulture, vinification, wine sensory analysis and the professional service of wine.

In Germany, the Certified Vocational Specialist Sommelier (IHK) is the highest nationally recognised sommelier qualification at DQR Level 5. Depending on your previous experience and career objective, you can choose from several qualification levels: from the Junior Sommelier as an entry-level programme, to the Assistant Sommelier including WSET Level 3, through to the advanced qualification as Certified Vocational Specialist Sommelier IHK.

The International Wine Institute is the only institute in Germany offering preparation for the IHK sommelier examination both as a state-approved distance learning programme and as an in-person course. This makes the programme particularly suitable for working professionals, career changers and ambitious wine specialists who need a structured but flexible pathway.

Why Pursue a Sommelier Education?

Demand for qualified wine sommeliers continues to grow. While overall wine consumption may be changing, consumers are increasingly investing in higher-quality wines. Premiumisation, origin, authenticity and professional wine advice are becoming decisive factors in restaurants, hotels, specialist retail and e-commerce.

A professional sommelier qualification opens up a wide range of career opportunities across hospitality and the wine business:

  • Sommelier in fine dining restaurants, hotels and premium hospitality
  • Wine consultant in specialist retail, wine retail and online wine commerce
  • Food & Beverage Manager or Restaurant Manager
  • Wine buyer for retail groups, importers or specialist merchants
  • Independent wine consultant, educator or trainer

A trained sommelier does far more than recommend wine at the table. The role combines wine list strategy, procurement, cellar management, margin calculation, guest consultation, staff training, sensory competence, storytelling and commercial wine expertise.

The average salary of an IHK-certified sommelier in Germany is approximately €35,000 to €45,000 per year. In senior positions, earnings above €50,000 are possible, particularly in management roles, premium hospitality, wine buying and high-end restaurant environments.
